IFA Electronics trade Show in Berlin

The world of technology is again changing – faster than ever.

It seems here in Europe, alot of the universities are well prepared for this. But in Australia, where people are still looking at technology advancements, such as 3D technologies, through the corner of their eyes, there seems to be a great lack in education offered to anyone who is interested (and trust me, anyone means everyone in the film/tv inustries)

It is projected that 3D content will soon make up 20% of the entertainment market – but this number will grow exponentially over the next 5 years. With such a large market share, it will be vital for Australians to be educated about the new technologies to be competitive, and have the experience nesscessary to work in international markets – not to mention assisting with the creation of original 3D content.

The last major 3D event n Australia was the Rugby League State of Origin matches, which were filmed by an American company who had to fly in specially built 3D cameras from Sony. This, of course, happened because there are very few people in Australia who could organise such a grand scale 3D event, not to mention the fact we also lack the infrastructure and equipment need to make it work.

I’ll be uploading pics from IFA shortly đŸ™‚

The Air is Dirty..But the streets are clean…

One of the first things i noticed when flying into Narita, Tokyo, was the thick layer of smog laying just below the first layer of the stratosphere. Coming from a rural area in Australia, i have to say – this site upset me. But, with over 35 million people living in the metropolitan area, its not surprising.

So, if this is what is happening here, what do the mayors, premiers and and politicians want for Australia – much of the same?? It definitely seems like we are moving that way. For the short time i have lived in Brisbane i have noticed the air becoming more and more polluted. This is basic mathematics. The more people who move there, the more cars are driven on the roads. The more cars that are driven on the roads, the more pollution goes int the air.

I just hope, that before to long, we can come up with a solution. Maybe plant more trees?? Ha, how can one make money from that – and really, at the end of the day, that’s what its all about… sad.

And so it begins . . .

And so it begins . . .

I am currently sipping on a lovely iced Chivas Regal, enjoying the polluted views of the Tokyo International Airport in Narita. How did i get here?? Well . . thats my story to start with . . .

A few months back i found myself sitting in my office, finishing off some budget work and scrolling through countless pages on modern musical technology when a small, brightly coloured advert caught my eye. “WIN 1 OF 4 SONY EXPERIENCES!”. Well, i thought, why not. All i had to do was write 50 words on why i think i should win just one of the four experiences on offer. Easy. Considering the categories were Movies, Music, Games and Technology, i had lots to choose from. So i went with what i know best. Technology – especially 3D technology. The words came out like pre-mix Coke, flowing with little interruption.

And then i completely forgot about it.. Three months had passed, so this was an easy thing to do. I didn’t even tell anyone i had entered… not until i recieved that magical email telling me i had gotten into the second round. But, even i thought that was ridiculous. The original entry stated that you needed your online “firends” to vote for you. While i have plenty of these, i always found it embarrassing to promote myself in any shallow way through Facebook or twitter – selfless promition is something i truely struggle with. The only votes i recieved for my original entry were the ones i put through myself. 7 of them in fact. all from generic, made up email addresses like “John@blahblah.com”. Seven, thats it – and i’m in to the second round.

So now the email is asking me to make a two minute video on how i am “..ready to make imagination become reality and experience the ultimiate SONY experience” wow, thanks sony, very specific.

i then sat down with a good friend, fellow DJ and business partner in crime Shaun Bergin (check out his blog HERE) and we began creating a plan. Surely there must be a couple of people out there, just like us, who had also gotten into the second round of this “ulitmate” sony cometition .  . . surely there must be a wiz out there with access to amazing cameras, studios and editing suites who will make a short film combing as much technology as they can to win this “ulitimate” sony prize . . . surely??

well . . . maybe you should be the judge, our short video can be seen HERE.

If you type “sony make.believe competition” into the youtube search bar, you will see the other entries. I was suprised when i saw out of the 25 people in my category who got into the second round, only 8 of them uploaded videos.

Never the less, here i am. Just about to leave Tokyo and head to the IFA Consumer Electronics Trade show in Berlin – all paid by Sony.

I have to also say a big thank you to the Queensland University of Technology for also supporting me on this trip. My experiences over here luckily benefit my work for QUT, and apart from spreading the good word and doing some light advertising for the university, i will be bringing back with me a mass of knowledge that i hope will benefit my work there and help furture proof the university against the natural flows of technological developments – if you would like to read more on that, please visit Shaun’s blog.
